Machete fight may have been gang related, Police say

Police are responding to a machete fight involving four men that spilled out of a supermarket parking lot onto a public street on Saturday.

?It appears that a group of males got into a confrontation where weapons were brandished,? Police spokesman Dwayne Caines said yesterday. ?It appears a group of men travelling on bikes were fighting with machetes whilst riding on vehicles.?

Mr. Caines said one of the men inadvertently struck a light truck, but no one was injured in the incident.

Police said the machete fight took place at 3.17 p.m. on South Shore Road in Paget.

The culprits and light truck were travelling in a westerly direction, he said.

Police would not rule out that the machete fight was gang related.

They also did they say whether any of the culprits were supermarket employees, or if customers were trapped inside the supermarket while a violent shouting match took place in the parking lot of the A1 Gourmet Supermarket on Middle Road, Paget.

?The general manager at the store was informed of a verbal altercation between two pairs of young people,? a spokesman of the A1 grocery said yesterday. ?They were in violent discussions, using verbal abuse. Then they all took off.?

He said the shouting match only lasted ?a couple of minutes?.

?The store manager said they were yelling obscenities at each other,? he said.

?It may have been something that carried on from somewhere else.?

Police are appealing to any anyone with any information to contact the Criminal Investigation Unit on 295-0011.
