A loving son and brother with dreams of going to college was killed early on Saturday morning when his car hit a wall.

Police said Derek Caines Jr., 22, of Pembroke died on North Shore Road in Devonshire just before 6 a.m. when he lost control of his grey Daihatsu in the Loyal Hill area.

Yesterday, his mother Delarie Outerbridge said Mr. Caines, the third road fatality of the year, was “loved by everybody”.

“He had an open-door policy at his house,” she told The Royal Gazette. “All his friends hung out there ...15 bikes could be found outside his house every night. People came from as far away as Dockyard and St. George's to see him.

“He was happy and well mannered. He was always smiling. He liked to have a joke.”

His friends said Mr. Caines always looked out for his only sister, 11-year-old, Onika.

“He was more than a big brother. He definitely fulfilled the role of big brother/father figure,” she said.

“He was very protective. Sometimes overprotective,” his sister said.

Mrs. Outerbridge said her son was a “hard worker” who was employed “building his uncle's house”.

But “as soon as he knocked off work, the first person he looked for was (his sister),” she said.

He was due to study in Seneca College in Ontario, Canada, in January.

“He had just faxed his papers off to go to college on Friday,” she said.

Police said Mr. Caines was travelling west on North Shore Road in the vicinity of Loyal Hill when he lost control of his car and collided with a wall. He was rushed to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 6.18 a.m.

Police are asking for any witnesses, who may have seen the collision, or a grey Daihatsu Charade in the area at that time, to please contact the Traffic Enforcement Unit at 295-0011.

Police extended their deepest sympathies to the Caines family.

The first road fatality of the year was guest worker and father of two, Donald Leger on February 5. The second was 22-year-old Jason Binns on May 19.

“We all love him. It's not too late to come back,” Mr. Caines' sister Onika said.
