Can Santos weather another storm?
Bermuda's hopes of snatching a win against touring Santos now rest in the hands of a local Select XI.
The South Americans were held to a scoreless draw in awful weather conditions against Premier Division champions Dandy Town on Tuesday night - just 48 hours after handing the national team a 3-0 defeat at the National Sports Centre.
Now, select assistant coach Dennis Brown is optimistic his charges have what it takes to acquit themselves well, providing they can adhere to the game plan during Santos' final match of a three-match tour of the Island.
“If we can perform to the best of our abilities then hopefully the end result will go in our favour,” said Brown speaking on the eve of his team's clash tonight at the West End.
“One advantage we will have is playing in the cooler conditions which I think made Santos a bit uncomfortable when they played against Dandy Town in the last match.”
Assisting Brown, who was due to name a final squad of 20 players for tonight's assignment, at the helm of the team is Devonshire Cougars coach Andrew Bascome.
A total of 26 players were originally invited to train with the Select XI, however, the squad has undergone a few notable changes.
Dandy Town striker Carlos Smith excused himself from the squad while Hornets team-mate Kingsley Mundy never trained with the team.
Somerset Trojans players Jelani Scott and Rohaan Simons have also been omitted from the squad. Scott is reportedly nursing an injury while Simons was overlooked after being elevated to the national team for last Sunday's opening tour match against the visiting South Americans.
Inspirational PHC Zebras sweeper Tokia Russell was the sole late addition to the local select, after dropping out of Sunday's game with flu. And, on paper, the local select appear to have a very balanced team, comprised mostly of young players perhaps on the fringe of national team duty surrounded by a few seasoned campaigners.
Having now had a good look at the opposition, Brown described the Brazilian team as a “technically sound” unit.
“Technically I think they are a well organised team and I admire their movement off the ball,” he noted. “I think there are a few things defensively which we need to be aware of to ensure that we ourselves come out well organised.
“I feel that on a smaller pitch like Somerset we can deploy a few defensive tactics to try to eradicate some of their efficient play.”
However, despite Santos being held to a scoreless draw in their previous outing with Town, Brown explained how no two games are ever the same. Therefore, the former Somerset Trojan and Bermuda national team skipper expects the Brazilians to throw caution to the wind and come out firing on all cylinders from the outset.
“I thought the conditions were a major factor, not taking anything away from Dandy Town because I thought they performed very well in those conditions,” Brown added.
“Both teams had to play under the same conditions and it wasn't good football weather but I don't expect them to come out and play the same way they did against Town.
“I expect a totally different match because I know they have something to prove. So we can't afford to come out complacent and thinking it's going to be easy - because it's not.”
