Ex-teen queen grows up with new adult sound

HAT are we going to do about this racial ignorance that plagues Bermuda today? Its almost like somebody took us back in time. Or maybe things are finally just reaching a head. It's not getting out of hand; it IS way out of hand and must be checked. I suspect that although much of the antisocial behaviour and violence that we have seen of late is the result of more deeply rooted issues.

However, this behaviour is still unacceptable and must be stopped.

More on all of this after the Top 20.

Still holding it down at number one is by Yung Joc. Moving on up to number two isby Shakira featuring Wyclef Jean, a former essential new joint and one of the most popular songs around.

Up to number three is another former essential selection, by Robin Thicke featuring Pharrell from the Neptunes. Robin Thicke reminds me of Jon B; he's a smooth, cool white dude who can really sing. This track is best described as smooth, funky, punchy, catchy and banging. You must check it out. However Pharrell is the Man! Consider the number of hits on which he has been featured over the past few years. Everybody wants to work with this guy. Everybody from Snoop Dogg to Kanye West to Robin Thicke. He might just be the most sought after person with whom to collaborate, if you want to produce a hit. The Neptunes are one of the most creative producer outfits in the business. These cats come up with some wicked, monster, unique and banging beats. I'd love to spend a couple of hours in the studio with them, to see how they do it.

Down to number four is by T.I. The beat is what makes this song so awesome.

Now some soca. Improving to number five is by Allison Hinds featuring Machelle Montano. Up to number six is by Explainer, which tells a funny story. Moving on up to number seven is by Destra, which has loads of energy and is good for any party.

Jumping up to number eight is , another soca hit, but this one is by Shurwayne Winchester. Falling to number nine is a former essential new joint, by Ne-Yo. Ne-Yo is one smooth cat; check out his other track which is now in the Top 20.

Up to number 10 is by Letoya, a former member of Destiny's Child. Climbing to number 11 is by Machel Montano featuring Patrice Roberts. I'm hearing this one on the radio all the time as well as at parties. Improving to number12 is by Young Leek.

Tumbling to number13 is , a dancehall anthem by Beenie Man. Falling to number14 is by Bubby Sparxx featuring the Ying Yang Twins.

Down to number15 is , the latest from Mary J. Blige, featuring Brook-lyn. Up to number16 it's Bermudian/Canadian/ Portuguese diva Nelly Furtado, with her killer new single, on which she teams up with Timbaland. Nelly has definitely grown up and is no longer daddy's little girl.

Improving to number17 is this week's essential new joint, , a very smooth dance track by my favourite dance diva, Madonna. This is vintage Madonna, in fact the entire CD is a collector's item. This track has a hot beat, with a deep bassline, which DJLT absolutely loves. The lyrics are those of a simple love song with somebody wanting to link up with somebody else. That's a story we have all lived at some point or other and with which we can all therefore identify. Full marks to Madonna!

Up to number 18 is by Bajan cutie Rihana. Climbing to number19 is Chamillionaire featuring Krayzie Bone with their hit .

Rounding things out at number 20 is a brand spankin' new release from Ne-Yo. This cat Ne-Yo is on his game. His tracks are a throwback to real rhythm and blues, a time without the harshness of rap, with real music, soulful love music, to which everybody can relate. You go Ne-Yo!

Now back to this week's word ? what do we do about Bermuda's racial problems?

Well, they say you reap what you sew. We have serious issues, that date back many years. My prayer is that we will be able to resolve all of the racial problems that we are facing to the extent that all people living in Bermuda can respect our differences, enjoy our similarities and live in peace and harmony. W

hat do we need to do to get there? The first thing we all need to do is accept that we all are here, that none of us has any more rights to anything than others.

The second thing that must happen is that we must implement steps to create a level playing field. People must learn to respect one another. Bermudians need to recognise that instead of fighting against one another, they should be banding together, working together to improve the quality of life for all. By Bermudians I mean Blacks, Whites, Portuguese, Indians, Orientals, whoever, regardless of race, creed, colour. We must all try to eliminate all the 'isms' from this society. It really IS possible for people that look differently to get along and live in a peaceful society.

Just take five children, aged five; from different cultural backgrounds ? say, one black, one white, one Portuguese, one Chinese and one from Lebanon, and put them on John Smith's Bay (gotta give my neighbourhood beach props). These five children don't care where they all come from or what colour any of them are; all they care about is having fun.

They will play at the beach, have fun with each other and treat each other with respect.

Take those same five children and check them out 15 years later. The world will have poisoned their minds with information and experiences that cause them to hold certain views about certain types of people, based on the colour of their skin, where they are from, etc.

We need to be more like children when dealing with each other. Little children have it right; its us adults that have it all wrong! We should all strive to be more Christ-like, and love our neighbours. We should all do unto others as we would have others do unto us. If we all obeyed the 10 Commandments, we wouldn't have racism or any of the other "isms" of this world. So, again, I say we need to go back to the BIBLE for advice, whenever we have problems. It is written, the answers are all there.

We need only read, listen, take heed to the scriptures and obey them. It is really that simple.

Peace be with you ...
