Village express steams on
Som. Trojans 0 North Village 3
The North Village express steamrolled through Somerset yesterday, leaving behind in its wake a trail of destruction.
A clinically executed first-half Dwight (Payback) Warren strike coupled with further second-half goals by Michael Hansey and Keith Jennings highlighted a sterling Village performance which left the home team in tatters.
Young defender Shannon DeShield and forwards Clay Smith, Kevin and Keith Jennings were all outstanding as Village completed an impressive league season sweep over the Trojans.
But despite enjoying a fifth successive win, the league leaders are still a long way from home as third-placed Devonshire Cougars can still claw their way level with a win over PHC Zebras in tomorrow night's match at the Rec.
“The important point was to come out with a high intensity because Somerset have been on a losing streak and obviously they too were desperate for three points,” said Village coach Scott Morton following the match.
That might have been something of an understatement as Warren capped off a text book build-up involving siblings Keith and Kevin Jennings which totally stunned the home side barely eight minutes into the match.
During a quick raid forward, Keith Jennings threaded a gem of a pass to Kevin on the right wing. The speedy forward raced to the touchline before finding an unmarked Warren in the middle with a precision cross. Warren made no mistake from eight yards with a firm blast that beat Timmy Figureido for pace.
Shaken but not stirred, Trojans immediately set about picking up the pieces and almost equalised when a Rohaan Simons' toe-poke from three yards was parried away by Village ‘keeper Dwyane (Streaker) Adams, who was later fortunate not to have been sent off for deliberately handing the ball outside the 18-yard box.
Trojans sweeper Gary Ray was then given a reprieve for casual play at the back. An alert Kevin Jennings dispossessed the veteran defender just inside the box but sliced his shot over the top.
Somerset's Damon Ming and Simons, who became more of a threat when he switched to the right flank, also had opportunities to convert but despite their combined efforts Village still led 1-0 at the half.
Village extended their lead shortly after the restart courtesy of a Hansey blast from an acute angle some seven yards out, Trojans again paying the ultimate price as Hansey was left all alone at the far post to ram a Kevin Jennings' cross home.
Watching their chances of salvaging at least a point slowly fade, Trojans opted for fresh legs, inserting Shawn Riley and Torry Davis into the match for the ineffective David Lawler and Sheridan Ming.
But even they couldn't stem the tide as Keith Jennings continued to control the middle of the park.
“Once we got into our rhythm it was always going to be hard to stop us.
“Keith (Jennings) is a very creative player and you can never restrict him. All you have to do is give him a general job description and then you can appreciate the things that he brings to the match,” added Morton.
The only blot on Jennings' copy book would be a late second half booking for kicking the ball into the net after referee Lyndon Raynor had blown the whistle.
Trojans also had Dwight Basden and Simons' names written in the refs' black book as frustration began to set in.
Emotions then ran high in the Trojans camp when striker Dion Stovell was floored in the penalty box. Despite arguing a strong case for a spot kick, the only thing Somerset would receive was a corner.
At the other end Kentoine Jennings had a powerful header pummel the upright.
However, Village were not to be denied a third goal in the 90th minute and it was only fitting that the late heroics would be bestowed upon Keith Jennings who rifled home Clay Smith's short pass inside the 18-yard box.
