Saltus students dig deep for charity
Students at Saltus Grammar School have raised over $4,800 for the hurricane relief effort on the Gulf Coast and almost $2,000 for new breast cancer detection equipment.
They employed a wide range of fundraising techniques to raise the cash.
A coin collection which was started at Saltus Cavendish Prep in September raised $1,091 for hurricane victims by the end of that month, and is still continuing.
The hurricane relief effort received a further boost thanks to a bake sale during one recess organised by P30 parents and Prep students raised funds outside of school through holding lemonade stands, cookie sales and car washes.
The Saltus Junior Department held a mid-week Grub Day which raised more than one thousand dollars, while senior students held a 'Mardi Gras' themed Grub Day, raising $2,400 for Redeemer High School in one of the hardest hit areas in Jefferson County, Louisiana.
The cash from these events was donated to the Bermuda Red Cross.
Meanwhile, on October 14, students raised nearly $2,000 towards the purchase of computer-aided detection technology for Bermuda's TB Cancer and Health Association. Senior students had a denim day, and junior students sported pink ribbons to raise cash for the new technology, which is said to improve breast cancer detection rates by up to 23 percent.
