Fire service douse hot rangers
action on Saturday as they shocked the high-riding Island Rangers 3-0.
Troy Furbert was the chief instigator of this upset, scoring twice while Steven Caines added the other goal.
The loss dropped Rangers out of second place into third on goal difference and enabled Fire Service to jump two places to sixth.
Taking advantage of the situation were Forties who beat Spinning Wheel 2-0 and now stand second on seven points, but are still a further seven behind leaders BAA Wanderers with a game in hand.
After a scoreless first half, Forties pounced on Wheel with goals from Steve Cotton and Wayne Bean. Wheel were forced to play the final 15 minutes a man short after their goalkeeper was sent off.
BAA meanwhile barely kept their perfect record intact as they came up against a determined Robin Hood bunch. BAA eventually were victorious 1-0, but it was certainly not one of their easier matches.
Arthur Reilly notched the decisive score for BAA.
Meanwhile, KPMG Peat Marwick were able to shut down Lobster Pot in their match at Shelly Bay and win 3-0 as Bob Newman, Neil Clemens and Ian Rix all got on the scoresheet.
Group B continues to be headed by Exiles and they continued their unbeaten run against Somerset Extros.
Kenny Monkman put Exiles ahead early in the second half before Arthur Tucker equalised for the visitors via the penalty spot.
However, Eddie Fox restored the one-goal margin for Exiles and Alan Johnson consolidated a 3-1 result with a splendid curling shot from 20 yards that caught the Extros goalkeeper off his line and sailed into the top right corner.
Keeping up the pressure on the leaders were North Village Rams, 3-2 victors against Devonshire Colts All-Stars.
Former Bermuda international Ralph (Gumbo) Bean dug into his bag of tricks to score twice. And with team-mate Denton Gibbons also twinkling the twine they were able to offset goals by Jeff Richardson and Larry Benjamin.
The only other Group B match had St. George's improve their goal difference at the expense of Coca-Cola with a 5-1 thrashing.
George Cannonier recorded a hat-trick while Wendell Smith aided the east-enders cause with two goals.
Glenn Fubler was Coca-Cola's goal scorer.
PHC's charge in Alliance Division Group A was slowed when Dandy Town managed to hold the league leaders to a 2-2 draw.
Nairobi Smith and Gladwin Johnson were both on target for the Hornets while Casey Burgess and Mark Smith countered for PHC.
Seizing the opportunity to gain a point on the leaders were Somerset, who blasted Devonshire Cougars 6-0.
Amal Thomas kept up his goal-scoring spree, registering a hat-trick and raising his season tally to eight. Strike partner Derek Robinson enjoyed similar success, twice finding paydirt and Dwayne Basden scored the remaining goal.
Also in a high-scoring vein was the match pitting North Village and St.
George's against each other.
Paul Simmons went on a rampage for Village, who won 8-4, shaking the rafters five times. Kevin Bailey (two) and Wali Salaam rounded out a rewarding day for Village.
Sinclair Smith (two), Damien Mendosa and William Richardson added goals for the losers.
Three matches were played in Group B with Hamilton Parish the biggest winners with a 8-4 hammering of Port Royal.
Parish shared out the scoring load with Quinn Outerbridge, Glen Smith and Antoine Darrell netting twice and Philip Burgess and Derek Smith one apiece.
Nakia Smith, Joe Rodrigues, Hubie Butterfield and Giovanni Wilson replied for Port Royal.
Devonshire Colts similarly feasted on St. David's coming away 6-1 victors. Yul Wade thumped home two scores along with Kevin Stovell and Keimon Lawrence and Vaughn Smith were also on target.
Reginald Pitcher got a consolation effort for the Islanders.
The day's final match had Southampton Rangers get past Prospect 4-1 on strikes by Alfred Wolffe, Omari Hart, Derek Lowe and Ivan Trott. Erskine Smith was Prospect's marksman.
KNOCKOUT PUNCH -- Fire Service goalkeeper Scott Quin clears from Island Rangers' Keith Bremar during Saturday's action.
