Overseas incentive for local athletes
Bermuda athletes will be striving to qualify for prestigious overseas championships this weekend when Bermuda Track and Field Association (BTFA) host a meet at the National Sports Centre (NSC).
With sand in the egg-timer ebbing away for those athletes who haven't yet qualified for major events this summer, athletes will be eager to reach their respective standards.
Events such as the Pan-Am Junior Championships in Trinidad, the World Youth Championships in Italy, and the CAC Senior Championships in Cuba are on the cards for athletes who have already qualified.
And for those who will be competing at the CAC Age Group Championships, this weekend will be a final warm-up before they leave to represent their country.
BTFA president Donna Watson expects the meet to be well attended and hopes many more athletes will make their standards.
"We are hoping for a good event and a good turn-out as we prepare for the National Championships that will be taking place on June 13 and 14," said Watson.
"This also will be an exciting event as we are incorporating distance medley relay corporate events, road running club relays, 100 metres for services (police, fire etc.), para-athletic events and we are hoping that some of the road runners come out to compete in the longer running events.
"Of course, at the end of the event we will be crowning the Bermuda national champions in each event."
She added: "We are looking forward to our athletes from overseas and who are away in school participating in these (national) championships. "
"We will also be having two para-athletic events as we are supporting the Adaptive Sport weekend with there being four athletes competing in the 200 and 400 metres while two athletes from overseas will also take part after they competed in the Beijing Paralympics last year.
"We have one of our young athletes, Tristan Joynes, home for the summer who has been competing in the hurdles events and we are very excited about that and hoping that he can qualify for one of these international events this summer."
