Since the closure of Pembroke Dump, it was particularly important that residents were aware of facilities for waste disposal and the importance of proper separation of garbage, a news release from the Ministry said.

"With the opening of Tynes Bay Waste Treatment Facility (the garbage incinerator), Bermuda has entered a new era in waste disposal,'' Works Minister the Hon. Leonard Gibbons said. Bermudians must learn that separation in the home and the workplace is a requirement and the key to the successful operation of Bermuda's waste management. The public must think about what goes where and why. It is with this in mind that we have started an advertising campaign to educate everyone about proper disposal of their wastes.'' The new facilities for commercial and residential waste disposal are: Tynes Bay drop-off site, open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. for loads of household waste, metal waste, PVC products, fluorescent lamps, ballasts and paint.

The mass-burn incinerator, which generates electricity from burning garbage -- PVC products are not accepted.

Airport Waste Management Facility -- bulky metal goods, tyres, batteries PVC furniture, scrapped motor vehicles are used to create land.

Marsh Folly Facility for compostable wastes including horticultural wastes and commercial kitchen wastes which are composted to make soil to convert the dump into a park.

Devon Springs Recycling Centre for aluminium, glass, steel food and beverage containers. Aluminium and steel products are shipped overseas for recycling, glass is reused to make roads and as a base in composting.

Sewage Disposal Facility for sewage delivered by sanitation trucks. Liquids go into the Hamilton sewer and the solid portion is dried for disposal on the dump. Possible future uses for solids may be as fuel for the incinerator and for composting.

Government Quarry for asbestos and usable structural steel. A suitable site offshore for asbestos is being investigated.

Designated retail stores which provide a drop-off site for batteries, oil and paint.

Hunt's Sanitation Services which collects vehicle batteries and scrap structural aluminium for recycling.

Hazardous waste drop-offs are held periodically. And residents can call Government at 292-7454 for collection of bulky items from homes which two workers can lift such as refrigerators, stoves, couches.

The Island's "comprehensive waste management'' system needs the community's support to work, Mr. Gibbons said.
