Yale band to help mark Regiment, Island milestones

After a rousing success at the Bremen Music Festival in Bremen, Germany in January, the Bermuda Regiment Band will be hosting the historic Yale University Concert Band next week.

The visit of the Yale band is part of a schedule of celebrations to mark the Regiment Band's 40th anniversary.

While the Regiment may think 40 years is a long time, it is doubtful the Yale band feels the same way. The Yale Band is 87 years old, but as early as 1775 a group of Yale musicians accompanied General George Washington to Cambridge, Massachusetts and found it not to their liking.

"The Yale Band was last here in 1983 to perform for the 375th Anniversary celebrations, and as this is the 500th anniversary celebrations of the discovery of the Island, it was an ideal opportunity for a return visit of the Band," said Major Barritt Dill.

They will be performing free concerts March 6 at 7.30 p.m. at the Cathedral where there will be a free will offering for the Tsunami relief fund. In addition, they will perform at CedarBridge Academy on March 8 for students there; at Sandys Secondary Middle School later in the evening and at Victoria Park on March 9 for a Noon Day Concert in the Park.
