High demand for film to be met with extra screening
Demand for the screenings of `When Voices Rise...', a documentary about Bermuda's 1959 Theatre Boycott, has been so high that film festival organisers have added a third venue for the film.
The film will be making its world premiere at the Southside Cinema at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
This world premiere screening and a second scheduled for April 16 at Liberty Theatre (9 p.m.) sold out in three days when Bermuda International Film Festival (BIFF) tickets went on sale last week.
Filmmaker Errol Williams interviewed many of the original members of the "Progressive Group" who anonymously organised the boycott in the 1950s in the making of his landmark documentary on Bermuda history.
Many of these leaders were not openly recognised for their struggles until 1999 when celebrations marked the 40th anniversary of the event which effectively led to the desegregation of Bermuda society.
"The demand for Errol's film has been incredible," said BIFF director Aideen Ratteray-Pryse.
"We are delighted to announce that we will be able to accommodate some of that demand by adding a third screening."
The additional screening will be held Saturday at Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute (BUEI) at 5 p.m. in the Tradewinds Auditorium. Tickets for this screening will go on sale tomorrow between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. at City Hall box office.
"We want to thank Heidi Van Nice and Ralph Richardson of BUEI for stepping into the breach at short notice and helping us out," Ms Ratteray-Pryse said. "Anyone interested in seeing the film should make sure they are at the City Hall box office first thing on Wednesday.
"I anticipate that we will sell out the third screening in short order."
The Saturday screening of `When Voices Rise...' will be followed by a gala reception at Zurich Centre from 7 p.m.
Tickets for the reception are $60 and can also be purchased at City Hall box office until Thursday between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. daily.
Tickets for the gala will also be available at the three BIFF theatres Friday and Saturday.
