Govt. workers miss out on their pay cheques

Approximately 2,380 Government employees and pensioners were unable to access their money via automated teller machines or Internet banking yesterday.

The Accountant General's office said the glitch in the Bank of Butterfield accounts was caused by an incorrect date which was placed on the file, and promised that employees would be able to access their funds in the usual way by this morning.

"We would like to extend our sincerest apologies to all members of the Civil Service that were affected by this glitch," said Accountant General Kenneth Joaquin. "We are pleased that we were quickly able to assess the problem and come up with a workable solution."

Provision was made for employees to withdraw money by going directly to a branch of the Bank of Butterfield. To complete these transactions they needed their pay advice in addition to photo identification.

Bank of Bermuda accounts did not appear to be affected.
