An innovative new car designed with special features for the handicapped could soon be seen on Bermuda?s roads.

Government has given car dealer Island Motors the green light to have the vehicle shipped in.

The ?Quovis? is manufactured by Vexel Automocion, of Spain and comes equipped with 505cc, two-cylinder inline deisel engine.

It comes in two versions; the L4 boasts a top speed of 45 kph while the L8 tops out at 70 kph. Both boast incredible fuel efficiency.

The vehicle?s only door is at the rear, allowing ramp access for people in wheelchairs.

Island Motors manager John Powell told : ?A remote is used to get into the car from the back. Someone in a wheel chair can just drive it right into the car from the back and then secure themselves in and drive. The cars can be driven directly from a wheelchair.

?The car is very small ? seven feet long and five feet wide. If someone is severely handicapped we can add features for their comfort and convenience. Instead of a steering wheel we can put in a joy stick.

?These cars have just been produced and not many countries have them. They will cost $35,000, unless Government waives the duty and then we can re-price them.

The cars have not arrived in Bermuda yet because they are still coming off the assembly line, he said.

?If it is a standard order the cars will be here in about six to eight weeks. But if the client needs a joystick then it may take longer.?
