Teacher honoured by Tennessee University
teaching award from the Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, Tennessee, where she teaches special education.
The Socrates Award "came as a nice surprise,'' said Dr. Lightbourne Bartley.
"It was for creativity in teaching.'' The former Friendship Vale teacher says she now wants to return home to use her expertise in special education, but has been unable to find a job.
She left Bermuda in 1984 to obtain her PHD after relinquishing her post at Friendship Vale.
"I hoped to return home but there were no jobs available,'' said Dr.
Lightbourne Bartley. "Meanwhile, I am building up my credibility and respectability in the United States.
"I have expertise Bermuda can use but I have been unsuccessful thus far in securing a position.'' AWARD WINNER -- Bermudian teacher Dr. Judith Lightbourne Bartley with the Socrates Award which she received from the Austin Peay State University in Tennessee.
