Drunk driver banned for a year

A Zambian man was fined $1,000 and disqualified from all vehicles for 12 months after admitting impaired driving in Magistrates' Court.

Crown counsel Sharika Dill told the court that on February 28, 2004, Kelvin Chunju, 28, of Appleby Lane, Paget, was seen failing to stop at the traffic lights on Church Street.

Police pursued Chunju as he travelled east down Church Street, but when they pulled him over, they noticed his eyes were red and he smelled of alcohol.

Once arrested he was given a breathalyser test which found he had a blood alcohol level of 99 milligrams of alcohol to 100 millilitres of blood, 19 milligrams over the legal limit.

Drugs charge denied

A Sandys Parish man denied possessing heroin with intent to supply when he appeared in Magistrates' Court this week.

Calvin Edwards, of Tankard Lane, Sandys was charged with committing the offence in St. George's on March 6.

He also denied obstructing Det. Con. Warren Bundy as he tried to search him on the same day in Paget.

Acting Senior Magistrate Carlisle Greaves set Edwards' bail at $10,000. His trial will be on April 14.

Fine for cannabis

A 19-year-old found with cannabis in his helmet was fined $1,500 this week in Magistrates' Court.

Shawn Swan, of Smith's Parish, was pulled over near the Bermuda College Increased Penalty Zone (IPZ) in Paget on November 29, 2003.

When searched by Police, Swan removed his helmet, and a bag containing 2.33 grams of marijuana fell to the street.

Acting Senior Magistrate Carlisle Greaves fined Swan $500 for possessing the drug, and $1,000 for having drugs in an IPZ.

Blue Juice to expand

Business may by booming for Blue Juice Bar because they have submitted plans to expand the premises.

The plans, consist of external renovations and creation of new washrooms. Blue Juice is located at Bermuda House Lane.

Wallet stolen

A student had her wallet stolen from a classroom at Somerset Primary School late on Tuesday afternoon. The wallet contained an undisclosed amount of cash and personal items.

Firm burgled

A sneak thief entered a Bermudiana Road business on Tuesday afternoon and stole an undisclosed amount of cash. The complainant said the cash was stolen between 12.15 p.m. and 1 p.m.

Fire scare

Bermuda Fire Service found itself unexpectedly causing a scare on Tuesday night.

Residents called The Royal Gazette after seeing thick plumes of smoke over the City of Hamilton. But the Fire Service itself was the culprit, burning two cars in the grounds of Fire Headquarters as part of a training exercise.
