Youths who have been causing mayhem in St. George's have been invited to a public meeting with community leaders tomorrow night to find out what is bothering them.

Residents in the Old Town were shocked earlier this month when two cars were torched and a Molotov cocktail - which luckily did not explode - was thrown at a Police car.

Young people have been invited to a meeting tomorrow at 7 p.m. in the Royal Artillery Club organised by St. George's Town Manager Lance Furbert and Reverend Larry Lowe of the East End Ministries Association.

It is expected the meeting will also hear demands that Government abandons plans to move the full-time Police Station from St. George's to Southside.

A petition calling for the retention of the station has attracted more than 500 signatures and a Royal Gazette online opinion poll found 97 percent support for the idea.

Mayor of St. George's Henry Hayward said yesterday: “The public, and in particular the youth that have been hanging around the streets, are invited to have a dialogue between them and the community.

“I trust that these youngsters will turn up and if they have any problems, to express them to see if we can't get a dialogue going.”

“I don't know what the problems are other than them hanging about the streets rather than becoming involved in say the community and youth centre that has programmes on just about every evening. There are things in the town they could get involved in.
