Let’s save a life

July 10, 2012Dear Sir,I’m writing once again to hopefully bring some awareness to both our public and to our Government. My concern is the over-congested roads, which all of us use on a daily basis. We have almost over saturated the whole Island with trucks, cars, buses, taxis, bikes, scooters, container haulers, and heavy construction equipment. All of these vehicles travel in and around Bermuda on a daily basis. So the congestion is massive. Our police have a big job trying to control all of this traffic daily.Bermuda’s driving public needs to be more cognisant of their speed. There are far too many accidents happening at a frightening rate daily. More caution must be given at all times. We have children going and coming from schools and we have tourists to consider as well. Some of the things I have noticed: One in particular is cars, trucks, bikes, etc at dusk and later driving with no lights. Recently I was passed at night by a car, at almost 10pm with no lights. Traffic has to notice that all cars coming at them and behind them have their lights on. Someone is going to get hurt or killed, if we do not change how we drive and ride around Bermuda.Recently a good friend of mine was jogging on her regular morning run along our railway trail, from the east going west near the crossing at the old Harmony Club Hotel and South Road. She stopped, observed both ways, a scooter travelling east let my friend cross, only for her to be struck down by a car going west coming up from the Paget traffic lights. Her injuries were quite extensive, and she could have died. We need to put crossing lights like the ones at East Broadway behind the old Crow Lane Bakery which could be activated when anyone is about to cross in either direction. Traffic would have to give way to all those using the Railway Trail.Another suggestion, going with the crossing lights. Two secondary lights should be placed to work in conjunction with the crossing lights — near the blind bend approaching the actual crossing coming up the hill going west from the traffic lights. This light would warn traffic to slow down because someone is crossing or about to cross at this junction and another light should be placed on the left side of the road going east towards the Paget traffic lights. This light would also alert traffic that the crossing is in use or about to be used. This would prevent accidents like the one my good friend has suffered. This could have been prevented had these lights been in place. Let’s do it!H GORDY GIBBONSPaget
