Interest soars in luxury airline
Inquiries about a luxury ?boutique airline? which plans a service from Bermuda to London have been flooding in to a local travel agency even though tickets are not yet on sale.
Fly First Class is waiting on UK and US aviation authority approvals before it can start flights to Stansted and Wilmington, North Carolina, but C-Travel is already fielding calls.
Although the Florida-based airline has remained tight-lipped over the planned new service, the US Press reported recently that it may begin as soon as April.
The planned schedule will see flights five days a week between Bermuda and London, with twice weekly flights to Wilmington.
The airline will use 767 wide-body aircraft, which are equipped to carry 90 passengers in a cabin layout that is actually big enough to accommodate around 200.
It plans to centre its marketing on the concept of luxury, promoting the idea that travellers will have more space and higher-quality food than with other airlines.
Carl Paiva, chief executive of C-Travel, said it has been receiving daily inquiries ever since word about Fly First Class got out.
?We?ve had lots of interest from both individuals and businesses particularly about flights to London. There have been numerous inquiries even though we are not promoting this or being aggressive with the marketing yet,? he explained.
?There have been inquiries from British people living in Bermuda, people from here who want to visit the UK, and the corporate sector also likes the idea of flying to Stansted. It?s a good airport for those who want to go on to other places within Britain as it?s the base for the low-cost air carriers there.?
Mr. Paiva anticipates that interest in the Wilmington service will increase once tickets go on sale. ?There are leisure attractions there such as shopping and places of historical interest, but the real highlight is the golf courses ? there are hundreds of them in the immediate area,? he explained.
Mr. Paiva said tickets are all ready to be sold, pending the green light from the US and UK. He added that the situation with this is ?looking good? and that the rumoured April start date ?may be on the cards?.
According to Minister of Transport Ewart Brown, Bermuda is ready and waiting to welcome Fly First Class.
?The Government has been in discussions with Fly First Class for some time now and we understand that there are a few steps that need to be handled at the US end. Once that?s done then we expect them to begin,? he said. ?We would welcome them ? one of our objectives is to increase airlift. This is a company that?s come along asking nothing of the Government in terms of monetary assistance and has an interesting business plan. Time will tell whether they will be successful but we have been impressed with the work they have done thus far.?
Dr. Brown added that more news on Fly First Class would be ?one of a number of announcements to be made on increased airlifts within the next 60 days.? However, he declined to elaborate on this point.
Government has been working since 2001 to lure cut-price US airline company JetBlue to Bermuda. Last month, the Island?s first full scheduled flight from Munich was finalised. The Munich Air service will take to the air in June.
