Bank pays out $1.1m to good causes

A documentary on saving the Cahow, athletes and education initiatives are among the projects which will benefit from a $1.1 million pay-out announced yesterday by the Bank of Bermuda Foundation.

The charity unveiled funding ranging from $25,000 to $200,000, bringing the total cash donated to good causes on the Island since 1989 to more than $15.5 million.

Foundation Secretary David Lang said: ?We assist many Bermuda charities with varying needs and requests. All of them provide significant services to Bermuda and carry out vital work within our community.

?These charities work tirelessly to raise funds for their projects and in partnership with the Foundation they are able to continue to help improve the circumstances in which we live.?

Bermuda Biological Station for Researchwhich celebrates its centenary, is given money to support a documentary on how the Cahow was brought back from near extinction, on Nonsuch Island.

Athletes appearing in the 2005 Island Games in Shetland, Scotland, will benefit from a Foundation payment.

Bermuda Junior Golf Association gets help with its April 2004 third annual Bank of Bermuda Foundation International Junior Championship.

The Bermuda Sloop Foundation, which promotes educational development and training for young people using a purpose-built sail training vessel, is another beneficiary.

Bermuda Track and Field Association will be given a donation for the Easter weekend meeting here on the Island of the Carifta Games.

Bermuda Union of Teachers is to be given money for a graduate level scholarship to the School of Graduate and Professional Studies at Endicott College, an accredited Institute through the New England Association of Schools and Colleges.

Money goes to the Institute for Talented Students, which offers an after school enrichment programme for identified academically talented students selected from all segments of Bermuda?s society.

Another beneficiary is Operation Respect, which encourages an end to bullying and ridicule in the classroom.

Expansion of facilities at Somersfield Academy, which provides education for young people, will be given a boost.

The Bermuda-based ISIS Foundation, which helps disadvantaged children in Uganda and Nepal, will be given a donation, as will Warwick Academy, which will use the money for staff development.

The final recipient is the West End Athletic Club, for its Schools Track and Field Challenge.
