An American visitor pleaded guilty on Friday in Magistrates' Court to importing drugs.

Debra Lucenti, 42, of Bethpage, New York, came to the Island on Monday with her husband on a cruise ship.

Crown counsel Cindy Clarke told the court that Customs and Police officers found .33 grams of cannabis in a cigarette in Lucenti's safe. She told officers that it was for her own personal use.

Lucenti, tearfully told the court: "I am very sorry - it only cost me $10."

Acting Senior Magistrate Carlisle Greaves said: "Bethpage has a famous golf course and isn't it the one where Tiger Woods won the US Open?

"It's really cheap to play on that course - only $30 - and it seems even drugs are cheap there."

Mr. Greaves handed down a fine of $500 or 50 days in jail.

After hearing the sentence, Lucenti said: "$500, for such a small amount. I've never been before a judge before."

Mr. Greaves asked her if she wanted to pay more or did she want to stay the extra 50 days.

Lucenti said: "No. I have two small boys at home."
