Voth and Toavs had earlier struggled against the team of John Goings and Jim Bauer in their semifinal match, losing the opening set 10-12 before coming back to take the second and third 11-5, 11-3. But they surprisingly encountered little resistence against Bell and Blee as they dominated from start to finish, winning in straight sets 15-3, 15-3.

In women's play Wendy Cummings and Kim Winter Bean came out on top following a hotly-contested match with the pair of Elisa Stubbs and Cindy Hamilton.

Hamilton twisted her ankle on the last point of the first set, but showed tremendous intestinal fortitude as she soldiered on. However, despite the effort her team still ended up losing 11-7, 10-12, 7-11 to Cummings and Winter Bean, who were brilliant on the day.

The competition -- the first of the new season -- contained 18 teams divided into four pools, two for men and two for women.

Each team played every other team in their pool with the top three from the men's pool advancing to tournament play -- which was a knockout format -- and the top two from each of the women's pools.

All of the eventual finalists won their respective pools as play went according to form. Among the men Bell and Wheatley were unbeaten in eight matches whereas Voth and Toavs went 7-1 to advance. Stubbs and Hamilton dropped just one game to wind up 8-1, while Cummings and Winter Bean were perfect, winning all nine of their opening matches.

The next tournament, the Fun in the Sun Doubles Volleyball Tournament, is scheduled for April 25, at Shelley Bay field. Additionally the Henry VIII Doubles and Sports `R' Us Co-Ed Doubles Volleyball Tornaments are set for May 9 and May 30 respectively.

ATHLETICS ATH Vernon Tankard took advantage of a weak field to run away with the top prize in the Sir Stanley Burgess Memorial Road Race on Sunday.

Averaging just under six minutes per mile for the eight-mile course, starting and ending at Devonshire Rec. field, Tankard beat second-place finsher Mike Whalley by almost a minute as he was timed in a credible 46:25. Whalley, who took first in the men's 40-49 category, recorded a time of 47:23.

Among the women, Anna Eatherley won her second consecutive race since returning to action after being sidelined by illness. Eatherley was 15th overall in 51:56 and beat the next best female, Margaret Hateley, by over 10 minutes.

Other category winners included Hateley (female 20-29), Miguel Butterfield (male 20-29), Fred Steede (male 30-39), Georgia Smith (female 30-39), Geoff Barnes (male over 50) and Frankie Simmons (junior male).

CHESS CHS Nick Faulks maintained his perfect record and captured the Bank of N.T.

Butterfield Cup in the 1992 Bermuda Open Championships as he defeated Harry Kast in last week's final round.

Faulks finished on seven points and was followed by a large contingent including Nigel Chudleigh, Brian Stephenson, Eric Kenn and Michael Craggs, who each totalled five points to tie for the second spot.

Tonight the Teams Double Elimination tournament takes place starting at 7.45 with Bishops playing Islanders and Kingfishers taking on Independents.
