There were 64 drink driving arrests over the first three months of the year, Police announced yesterday.

Seventeen of these arrests involved road traffic accidents according to the released alco-analyser statistics to date.

That number is significantly lower than the 103 arrests reported during the January through March period last year however.

The majority of those arrested were males - 60 men as opposed four women - with the highest concentration falling in the 31-40 and 41-50 age groups.

Five people under 21 years were arrested and nine who were over 50 years.

The highest number of arrests fell on the weekends with 50 arrests recorded on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays and only 14 on other days of the week.

The largest proportion of arrests were made between the hours of 1 a.m. to 3 a.m. (19) followed closely by 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. (18).

Thirty-five of those arrested failed the alco-analyser test with the highest reading reported at 302 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood.

The legal limit in Bermuda is 80 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood.

Seventeen men and one woman refused to be tested and 11 people tested within the legal limit.

Of those arrested, 32 were driving cars, 26 bikes, five trucks and one was a taxi driver.
