English touring team to take on Somerset
Sou'Westers Cricket Club will arrive in Bermuda early next month for a six-match tour to be hosted by Somerset Cricket Club.
Founded in 1930, Sou'Westers is a touring team whose primary function is to tour the West Country of England every summer.
The English club, based in St.Albans, Hertfordshire, have also embarked on overseas tours to countries such as Portugal, Spain and South Africa in the past.
Sou'Westers CC will officially launch their tour with a 50 over contest against hosts Somerset April 4 before the two sides meet again April 9 in a 20/20 affair under floodlights.
The visitors will then come up against Premier Division 50 overs champions Young Men's Social Club in a 50 over contest April 11 before squaring off with Bermuda's Under-19 national squad April 12 in another 50 over match.
They will then close out their whirlwind tour of the Island with back-to-back 20/20 matches against Western Counties and Belco Cup champions Southampton Rangers under floodlights April 15 and opponents yet to be confirmed April 16.
All matches are to be played at Somerset Cricket Club.
Meanwhile, ex-Bermuda and Bailey's Bay wicketkeeper/batsman Ricky Hill and Barbados wicketkeeper/batsman Ricky Hoyte have emerged as the frontrunners to vill the vacant coaching position of Somerset's senior cricket team.
It is understood both men have expressed keen interest in the job and have already been interviewed by club management who are expected to make a final decision prior to next month's incoming tour by UK side Sou'Westers CC.
In recent years Hill has coached at the national youth level and currently holds West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) coaching credentials.
Hoyte, the grandson of legendary former West Indies Test player Sir Everton Weekes, played an integral role in Social Club's back-to-back Premier Division 50 over success and his experience playing first-class cricket in the Caribbean could come in useful at Somerset.
Somerset have been without a full-time coach since the end of the 2007 season when former club stalwart Winston Reid resigned.
The ex-Bermuda and Somerset batsman has now been targeted by First Division Somerset Bridge who are keen to have him coach at White Hill Field this season.
Earlier this year former national team skipper Clay Smith agreed to terms of a coaching deal at St.George's Cricket Club.
