Window on his world

A retrospective of art by William Collieson opens at the Bermuda National Gallery tonight. BNG chairman Gary Phillips said the gallery was proud to host the exhibit.Mr Collieson worked as a window display artist after art school. His windows featured the same elements one finds in his artwork: satirical humour, unconventional materials and the continual probing of the boundaries of art.“His artwork, some of which has been exhibited overseas, very much is in conversation with international artists who are pushing the boundaries on the meaning of ‘art’, provoking viewers with challenging yet playful themes,” Mr Phillips said. “Many see his work as humourous; it is also very political, commenting on power, society, and how we treat each other and our planet.”‘William Collieson: A Retrospective’ continues until August 23.The BNG is hosting art talks, opportunities to meet Mr Collieson on February 9, March 9 and April 6 at 12.30pm.
