Pembroke man gets 'time served' for cannabis

A man pleaded guilty to gun and drugs possession at Supreme Court yesterday, after getting caught in a Police sting last year.

Another man who was travelling in the passenger seat of his car during the incident also admitted to drug possession.

Michael Zephaniah Eversley, 29, of Pembroke, and Marcus Shawn Bean, 29, of St. George's, were both charged with possessing a Tallon T 200 nine millimetre pistol and seven rounds of nine millimetre ammunition, and possession of 9.6 grams of cannabis.

Bean was further charged with possessing 3.3 grams of cannabis.

The charges came last June after Police stopped a car that was being driven by Eversley, with Bean in the passenger seat. Prosecutors told Magistrates' Court at the time that Police received a tip that the two men were due to hand over the gun at Curving Avenue in Pembroke and were waiting for them.

Police saw the two accused in a parked car and watched as a motorcyclist drove up and uttered some words. The car then began to follow the motorcyclist. Police stopped the car and found the pistol wrapped in a blue bandanna in a glove compartment in between their two seats, with the ammunition inside it. The larger amount of marijuana was in the car, with the smaller amount in Bean's pocket.

Yesterday, at Supreme Court, Eversley pleaded guilty to the gun possession and the 9.6 grams of marijuana. He pleaded not guilty to possessing the ammunition. Bean pleaded not guilty to the firearms charges, but guilty to possessing the 3.33 grams of marijuana.

Prosecutors asked for the firearms charges against Bean to lie on file, not to be proceeded with.

He was sentenced by Puisne Judge Charles-Etta Simmons to the time he had spent in prison since his bail was revoked on June 9.

Eversley, meanwhile, must come back to court on October 1 at the monthly arraignments session, when a date for his sentencing will be fixed.
