Sandys Middle School will be getting a new sports centre.

Sandys principal Dr. Melvin Bassett hailed the project, which will also be available to students from other West End schools and members of the public. ?After school hours it will be used as part of an extended after-school programme for the community,? Dr. Bassett said. ?In the evening hours the gym, fitness centre and pool will be used by the public.?

Funds for the project are being raised by the Sandys Secondary Foundation and Dr. Bassett is hoping to get some money from Government. ?Hopefully we will have enough money to break ground this year, at least by autumn,? he said.

Last month the Development Applications Board approved the school?s plans to demolish a cottage, remove a netball court and realign a car park and sports field so the facility ? which will include a swimming pool, aerobics suite, weights room, gymnasium, juice bar, shower and changing facilities ? can be built.
