A disturbing picture of a child who was literally standing up with two-thirds of her body outside of the back window of a car was sent to The Royal Gazette by e-mailyesterday.

The driver who took the picture of the car was not named but sent the e-mail to friends in the hopes that someone would know the person driving the car and the hope that this practice did not continue.

The white car was followed from the south round-a-bout, down to Crow Lane, where the photograph was taken a few Saturday's ago, the e-mail said. The driver, obviously, did not seem concerned about the child's safety.

Yesterday, Police spokesman Robin Simmons sent a message to the media to remind parents of the concerns of children riding in cars.

Mr. Simmons said infants under the age of one should be in the backseat facing the rear of the car and in a baby seat. Once children are over the age of one and weigh more than 20 pounds they should ride facing forward in a child safety seat.

If children have grown out of their safety seats but are still too small to ride with a seat belt on, he said usually 40-80 pounds and under four foot, nine inches, they should ride in a booster seat. Mr. Simmons wanted to remind parents that all children under 12 should be sitting in the back of the car. And with the introduction of the new seat belt laws, they should always be strapped in.
