Furbert first female All-Star

St George’s will unveil a secret weapon on holders Somerset today at Wellington Oval when Chevonne Furbert becomes the first female to play in the annual Over-40s Veterans All-Stars game.

The match, now in its 24th year, is for the RO Smith Trophy. Smith is the grandfather of Furbert who was one of the island’s top female players a couple of decades ago when playing as a striker for champions Rude Girls.

“I think it’s great, we’ve been putting a lot of emphasis on the women’s game and she was a veteran in the women’s league,” said organiser David Brangman who is looking forward to history being made. The match starts at 3pm.

The match, sponsored by Carlsberg and Pearman’s Funeral Home, will again honour past players from the two clubs.

This year the Somerset honourees are Eugene “Docs” Outerbridge, Alvin “Feets” Wade and Quinton “Kite” Ible while those recognised for St George’s are Glenn “Cleary” Pitcher, Clevie Foggo, Gary “Sid” Caisey, Kenny Pearman and Mike Whalley.

The presentations will be made afterwards in the club but referee Anthony Mouchette, who is also being honoured, will be recognised at the start of the match as he has another commitment.
