Station are gathering momentum.

Campaigners have formed a group, Youth Athletic Organisation Bermuda (YAOB).

And on Wednesday night they agreed to join forces with another group of parents also hoping to keep the sporting activities going.

The future of the programme at the St. David's Base was thrown into doubt by the US Navy pullout.

Last week, Base commander Capt. Timothy Bryan told The Royal Gazette the Navy was handing over sports gear, including baseball uniforms, bats and balls, to Bermuda Government.

This followed a letter in which Government stated it intended continuing the Youth Athletic Organisation programme.

Founding members of YAOB are Mr. Kelvin Hastings-Smith, Mrs. Cindy Hollis, Mr.

Roger Hollis, Mr. Mark Gibbons, Mr. Albert Fox, Mr. Timothy J. Counsell, Mr.

Oleney Carlington, and Round Table Hamilton No 1.

Mr. Hastings-Smith said the group had been formally constituted.

This met the only outstanding requirement from the Ministry of Youth, Sport & Recreation to win their 100 percent backing for continuing the YAO programme, he added.

"An informal meeting will take place over the next two days to form a steering committee and thereafter, an open meeting will be called seeking to appoint the executive management of the organisation.'' Mr. Hastings-Smith, chairman of the Round Table Hamilton No. 1, said this week's meeting with the other group of parents had been very helpful.

"There was agreement in principle to join forces. We are now moving ahead very swiftly.'' The Round Table Hamilton No. 1 has pledged its support for the programme and put up $10,000 towards running it.

Two other organisations have hinted they might lend cash support as well.
