Donations pour in for tsunami relief effort

The Bermuda Red Cross yesterday reported perhaps their busiest day ever as locals dug deep for the relief effort to the tsunami-hit countries of Asia.

Helen Wicks, administrator of the Bermuda Red Cross, did a quick tally of takings at the office at 4 p.m. yesterday and reported $6,460 had been donated.

She said that she had been in from 8.30 in the morning and had a steady stream of people on the phone donating as well as walking into the office on Berry Hill Road in Paget.

"Lots come in. Many people on the phone have made donations using their credit cards and others have physically walked in to hand in cash and cheques," she said.

"It's been the busiest I've ever experienced."

And the Salvation Army territory of Canada and Bermuda has donated $1 million dollars.

Major Lindsay Rowe, head of the Army in Bermuda said locals could donate through the office here or online.

"I would encourage the general public to donate to the cause and if they want they can do so through our office on 10 North Street. They can also go online and donate to our territorial office www.salvationarmy.ca or internationally at www.salvationarmy.org.

Major Rowe said those wishing to donate through the Salvation Army were able to specify the country to which their funds would be sent.

Those wanting to make donations through the Red Cross can deposit funds in either of the following accounts: The Bank of Bermuda 701 21565 or Butterfield Bank 2006 060 401 365-200
