George's as the first in a series of events to commemorate the 375th anniversary of Bermuda's Parliament.

The debate on Tuesday will be held at the site of many of the early meetings of Parliament. Since space constraints will not allow public attendance the debate is to be videotaped by VSB TV.

Other anniversary plans are to be revealed by House Speaker the Hon. Ernest DeCouto and Senate President the Hon. Albert Jackson at a news conference on July 6.

Under the chairmanship of Mr. DeCouto and Sen. Jackson, a committee of United Bermuda Party and Progressive Labour Party MPs has been meeting for several months to plan the anniversary.

POWER CUT AROUND HARRINGTON SOUND BUC Power cut around Harrington Sound The Bermuda Electric Light Company yesterday announced that it will be shutting off power for three hours tomorrow in the Harrington Sound area.

The interruption, from 9 a.m. and noon, was due to emergency high voltage cable repairs, Belco spokeswoman Ms Linda Smith said.

"We normally try to give customers longer advanced notice of scheduled repair work and interruptions of supply, particularly when it affects a large area,'' Ms Smith said.

"However in this case the work is considered an emergency repair and is being done to avoid the possibility of a longer unscheduled power outage.'' The outage will affect customers on Harrington Sound Road, between Palmetto Bay Hotel and Harrington Hundreds.

It will also affect all estate roads in the area, such as Town Hill Road, Lolly's Well Road, Grove Apartments, Queens Lane, Brightside Crescent, Gatehead Lane, Hollis Estate, and Breezeway Lane.

OPENING TIMES AT LONGBIRD CURTAILED TRA Opening times at Longbird curtailed Opening times at problem-plagued Longbird Bridge have been cut.

From now on, the St. George's bridge will be open to ships and boats on the hour, 8 a.m. to 11 a.m., and 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Works and Engineering Minister the Hon. Leonard Gibbons explained the hours, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. were extremely busy with motorists going to and from the Airport.

"We are reluctant to risk another breakdown then. Evening openings will continue on request. This schedule will be in effect until further notice.'' Mr. Gibbons added: "We certainly appreciate the public's co-operation. As soon as we can revert to our normal practice we will make an announcement.'' The bridge has broken down several times recently, causing huge traffic jams.

WOMAN TRIED TO PULL MAN OFF HIS BIKE CRM Woman tried to pull man off his bike A woman motorcycle driver tried to pull another motorist of his bike while they were both still moving, Police reported yesterday. Police said the woman had performed "a daring manoeuvre'' which endangered the other driver. When he threatened to report her, she tried to pull him off his bike.

She sped off when the man signalled a nearby Police officer.

The incident is under investigation.

GARGAGE PIC-UP MOVED OVER HOLIDAY TSH Garbage pick-up moved over holiday Garbage and recyclables will be picked up on Saturday, June 17, instead of the following Monday, a public holiday.

Pick-ups will begin at 7.30 a.m, although for people who want to drop off their own rubbish, the Tynes Bay Waste Facility will be open as normal on Monday between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m.

JOBLESS MAN CHOOSES JAIL OVER A FINE CTS Jobless man chooses jail over a fine An unemployed man yesterday opted for 20 days behind bars rather than pay a fine for drinking alcohol in a public place.

Sherwyn Simmons, 42, of My Lord's Bay Road, Hamilton Parish, pleaded guilty to the charge in Magistrate's Court.

Prosecutor Sgt. John Dale told the court Police warned Simmons on May 30 after they spotted him on Court Street drinking a beer wrapped in a white plastic bag.

But Sgt. Dale said Simmons continued to drink the beer and was arrested.

Senior Magistrate the Wor. Will Francis ordered him to pay $200 yesterday or spend 20 days in prison.

Simmons told Mr. Francis he could not afford to pay the fine.

When Mr. Francis asked if it would help if he was given time to pay the fine, Simmons said: "I don't have a job, so I'm not going to be able to pay. I'll take the 20 days.'' DOUBLE WHAMMY FOR CARELESS DRIVER CTS Double whammy for careless driver Gary Williams paid a double penalty for careless driving -- he hurt himself and was fined $300.

Williams, 19, was injured after causing an accident in Stowe Hill, Paget, last October, Magistrates' Court heard yesterday.

Prosecutor Sgt. Donald Grant said Williams was in collision with another auxiliary bike, causing the rider to fall off.

Williams then collided with the front near-side of a car, and received abrasions to his knee, arms and face.

There was damage to both bikes, said Sgt. Grant.

Senior Magistrate the Wor. Will Francis fined Williams after he admitted driving without due care and attention.

Williams, of Ord Road, Paget, was fined a further $810 after pleading guilty to speeding, and three charges of driving without a licence.

MAN ROBBED ALONG THE RAILWAY TRAIL CRM Man robbed along the Railway Trail Police are investigating the robbery of a 68-year-old visitor on the Railway Trail in Sandys.

The man told Police he was riding along the trail on Monday when a man approached him demanding his wallet.

The assailant tried to pull the visitor off his cycle when he refused to hand over the wallet. During the struggle the victim's trousers were ripped and the robber tore the wallet away and ran off.

Police yesterday confirmed that they had arrested a 26-year-old Sandys man in connection with the incident.

JEWELLERY THIEF STRIKES WARWICK HOME CRM Jewellery thief strikes Warwick home Thieves made off with jewellery and valuable documents on Tuesday after breaking into a Warwick home.

Police reported that the house had been broken into several times in past weeks.

Also on Tuesday, a 38-year-old Southampton woman reported her chequebook was stolen from a Warwick hotel over the weekend.

POLICE INVESTIGATE ALLEGED DOMESTIC CRM Police investigate alleged domestic Police are investigating an alleged assault in which a 34-year-old Pembroke woman was punched in the head and body by a 37-year-old male acquaintance at her residence.

The man is also said to have "butted'' her in the forehead, causing injury, and further threatened her, Police reported yesterday.

PUBLIC INSULT LANDED WOMAN IN COURT CTS Public insult landed woman in court A public insult exposed Laquita Lightbourne to a few sharp words from someone else's tongue -- a magistrate's.

Senior Magistrate the Wor. Will Francis on Tuesday warned the 25-year-old about the dangers of slander, and abusing people in public.

Lightbourne landed before him after she accused another woman in a restaurant of being a "sick bitch and a thief'', Magistrates' Court was told.

Lightbourne, who admitted using insulting words, received six months' conditional discharge.
