Cougars rise to top of the table
St George’s 0 Devonshire Cougars3Devonshire Cougars replaced Southampton Rangers at the top of the Premier Division after cruising to victory against struggling St George’s at Wellington Oval yesterday.Super sub Drewonde Bascome scored a late brace while Korvon Tucker’s well taken goal in the first half proved to be enough in the end as Cougars claimed their fifth league win of the season to leapfrog Rangers in the standings, having scored more goals than their rivals. The final scoreline flattered as neither team were able to take this match by the scruff of the neck and ultimately Cougars’ better finishing proved to be the real difference.St George’s started the match promisingly with a series of probing raids and nearly cracked the ice when Jahron Dickinson’s lob struck the upright after the striker had intercepted the ball deep in Cougars’ territory.Having been spared the blushes for sloppy defending, Cougars snatched the lead for good in the fifth minute when Tucker latched onto a loose bouncing ball in the area and lobbed the onrushing Zeko Burgess. With their tails now up, Cougars tightened their grip in the middle of the park with the influential Chris Caisey and Tucker pulling all the strings and nearly stretched their lead before the half.Chae Brangman, who was a thorn in Colts side all afternoon, was denied by Burgess who made a fingertip save at the near post while Trae Dill dribbled the ball right into the ‘keeper’s arms when passing to the unmarked Brangman in the area seemed a better option. The visitors suffered a major setback when centre back Kijuan Franks limped off hurt with a knee injury. However, Franks’ departure did little to disrupt the chemistry of his team-mates who continued to hold a slight edge over their hosts in the second half.Cougars threatened to increase their lead when Brangman flicked Caisey’s pass wide of the target while Tucker had an angled shot saved by Burgess at the near post.Bascome came on in the 55th minute and immediately made his presence felt with a series of darting runs from midfield. With time running out St George’s mounted a late fightback.Dickinson shot right at the Cougars ‘keeper Kioshi Trott from close range and then squirted another effort wide from an angle. St George’s forward Cavun Ottley also missed a free header in the box after Trott hesitated to come off his line while Mishal Paynter shot over the bar when well placed. These missed opportunities came back to haunt Colts as Bascome struck twice within a three minute span to finally kill the game off.The dreadlocked midfielder’s first came in the 86th minute when his left footed shot went through a maze of legs and nestled inside the far post. And before the dust had settled Burgess was digging the ball out of the net again after an unmarked Bascome slotted the ball into the far post during a raid down the right flank to leave the home side completely gutted.St George’s: Z Burgess, M Hodsoll, E Signor, P Anderson, M Paynter, J Daniels, C Ottley (W Stovell, 85th), W Jones (A Douglas Jr, 55th), K Wilson (T Ottley, 80th), D Signor, J DickinsonSubs not used: M Tucker, J Anderson, C Marshall JrBooked: P Anderson, M PaynterDevonshire Cougars: K Trott, D Williams, L Tota, K Franks (D Cox, 35th), Z White, C Caisey, D Daniels (J Smith, 74th), K Tucker, T Dill (D Bascome, 55th), D Coddington, C BrangmanSubs not used: J Seymour, J Furbert-Wade, K DeSilvaGoals: K Tucker (5th), D Bascome (86th and 89th)Booked: D Daniels, K TuckerMan of the match: K Tucker (Cougars)Referee: E Holmes
