Heatache for Southampton as Rec. escape
An incredible batting slump by Southampton Rangers enabled Devonshire Rec.
survive the quarter-final stages of the Open Knockout at Devonshire on Saturday.
Southampton were chasing 161 for victory and were seemingly right on course at 142 for three when the bottom fell out. Michael Brangman (37) became the fourth out with the total on 142 but within a short span three more wickets -- Kyle Lightbourne, Clevie Wade and Lyndon Raynor -- fell for the addition of only one run.
Of the remaining batsmen no one was able to withstand the pressure and the visiting team were soon experiencing the bitter taste of defeat.
Southampton were put in a good position after Brangman and Clevie Wade (56) put on 72 runs for the fourth wicket.
In addition to Brangman and Wade, only opener Olin Jones was in double figures with 31.
Anthony Edwards was Devonshire's top bowler with three for 25 while Mark Trott took two for 23 and skipper Anthony Amory had two for 24.
Earlier, Devonshire had a scare when three wickets were down for 17 runs, but opener Donald Norford (31) and skipper Amory (41) put on 43 for the fourth wicket taking it to 60.
Amory and Pace (15) put on a further 31 for the fifth wicket, but once the latter was out it did not take Southampton long to go through the remaining batsmen. Winston Trott, Jr. made 18, Toriano Henry 15 not out and Erskine Smith 12.
Gary Williams led the Southampton attack with three for 30 while Kyle Lightbourne had three for 44 and Jones two for 29.
Bailey's Bay 243-9 Cleveland 174 Jermaine Outerbridge smashed 73 and Glenn Smith continued his prolific ways with 51 as cup-holders Bailey's Bay cruised to a 69-run win over Cleveland at Sea Breeze Oval.
Bay advance to a semifinal meeting with Police while last year's beaten finalists Devonshire Rec., who squeaked by Southampton, will take on Western Stars.
Outerbridge's first scoring stroke was a six and the youngster would hit six more clear out of the ground to go with four fours as he found the Cleveland bowling much to his liking.
Outerbridge added 52 for the fourth wicket with Smith and then 51 with Ricky Hodsoll (20) as Bay recovered from 55 for three.
A timely knock of 24 not out from Tajmal Webb made certain Bay batted through their 50 overs after Outerbridge was eighth out at 204. Diallo Sharrieff was the top Cleveland bowler with three for 56 while spinner Del Hollis, who opened the bowling, Peter Philpott and Grant Smith each took two wickets.
Cleveland's reply never got off the ground after the opening partnership was broken. Grant (18) and Wayne Smith (eight) put on 33 before Clarkie Trott trapped the latter lbw. Ten overs later, Cleveland were 63 for five and out of it with only skipper Philpott of the recognised bats still around.
Philpott was the next out at 81 having made 19 then some late heroics from Carlton Smith, who made 40, went some ways to easing the sting of defeat.
Smith stroked four sixes and a four in his knock and Sharrieff made 23 and Cory Lowe 16 as the tail-end produced the bulk of the runs.
Outerbridge capped a splendid personal performance by taking four for 29 from 7.5 overs while Trott finished with two for 20 from 10 overs.
Somerset 173 Western Stars 174-7 Home team Stars survived a few anxious moments before seeing off a James Swan-inspired Somerset side.
First, Swan belted an unbeaten 67 at number nine, then he made Stars sweat it out with his leg spin.
Somerset, whose players arrived in spurts, were hardly prepared to take on the favourites and so it was no surprise when they were 89 for eight in the 35th over.
But Swan changed the complexion of the match with an innings of tempered aggression that brought four sixes and five fours. He added 34 runs for the ninth wicket with younger brother Charles (four) and then an even 50 with last man Anthony Bailey (17).
Allan Brangman topped the Stars bowlers with three for 17 while Roger Leverock took two for 18 and Arnold Manders two for 35.
Stars made a measured approach to the total, as Cleon Scotland hit a solid 30, and appeared to be well in control at 122 for three at which time high man Arnold Manders (45) was bowled by James Swan.
Seven runs later, Jeff Richardson went for 22 and there was real cause for concern in the Stars camp. But skipper Gary Brangman weighed in with 15 not out and he added 22 with brother Allan before closing out the match with Leverock, despite losing two more wickets.
Swan finished with two for 24, including a colossal six through mid-wicket that Leverock pulled from outside off stump to ease the home team's nerves.
Shannon Warner, the sixth and last bowler used, took two for 15.
Flatts 155 Police 159-1 Police powered their way to a commanding nine-wicket victory over Flatts at Police field thanks to a whirlwind century by top batsman Tyrone Smith.
Smith hammered an undefeated 119 in his best batting display of the season. It proved to be a good all-round day for Smith who earlier took two wickets for 29 runs.
Smith, who opened the batting with Dennis Archer, tore the bowling to shreds as Police chased victory, hitting 15 fours and seven sixes during the onslaught.
The openers put on 81 for the first wicket in only 10 overs. When Archer was out for 15, caught by James Bean off Floyd Smith, Smith and Dwayne Leverock (17 not out) got the remaining runs without any trouble with a second-wicket stand that put on 78 runs.
Rodney Woolridge made 40 for Flatts.
