Around 50 people attended a meeting last night to call for greater protection for pedestrians at the Collector's Hill junction in Smith's.

Parish council chairwoman Lee Hall said Government was working on a plan but had not allowed her to see it.

She said Works Minister Alex Scott had been invited to attend the meeting at Centenary Methodist Church but was unable to come.

Many at the meeting called for pedestrian crossings, traffic lights and yellow lines while Carlton Smith said traffic should be reduced to 15 mph on a section of South Road.

Norman Noble said crossing South Shore road was a big danger and a large proportion of the church were elderly and had problems getting across the road to the church because of the volume of traffic.

David Lopes said he had urged the Police Commissioner Jonathan Smith to crack down on people parking in bus lay-bys.

Speciality Inn owner Johnny Troja said: "How come the Police and Government are not here? It is not acceptable, they should be."

The meeting was attended by Government Sen. Patrice Parris plus Opposition MPs Michael Dunkley, Allan Marshall and Cole Simons.
