Children may have set shed on fire

A fire, suspected to have been set by children, left a homeowner with approximately $200 in damage to a shed.

The Bermuda Fire Service attended a Bay Lane, Somerset home after a reported fire at 2.46 p.m. on Saturday.

Palm trees near the shed caught fire and then set the ablaze, said spokesman Lt. Dana Lovell.

After investigating the area, he said, fire personnel found matches littered near the shed and the trees but could not find any children in the area.

Damage was limited to the trees and the shed.

Lt. Lovell said the Fire Service sees three or four cases a year of children playing with matches in spite of efforts to teach children about fire safety.

Crash driver arrested

A 43-year-old man suspected of impaired driving was arrested on Thursday night after a three-vehicle accident in which a motorcycle rider was injured.

A Police spokesman said the accident happened on South Road, Devonshire at the junction of Tee Street.

The rider was taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital for his injuries, but they were not seen to be serious.

Police said the 43-year-old Warwick man attempted to overtake a car in front struck the motorcyclist coming in the opposite direction and then veered back into the eastbound lane and struck the first car.

The 43-year-old man was subsequently arrested for impaired driving.

Impaired driver hurt

A man was arrested for suspicion of impaired driving on Sunday night after he was involved in a single vehicle crash.

The Bermuda Fire Service reported that they arrived at 10 p.m. to the scene of an overturned vehicle on the South roundabout on Trimingham Hill, Paget.

The driver had hit the sidewalk and his vehicle rolled on its roof causing extensive damage to the car.

The man escaped with cuts to his lip and forehead. A Fire Service spokesman said the driver was not wearing his seatbelt.

Police reported that the man was taken to Hamilton Police Station on suspicion of driving while impaired.

Bail rejected

A Jamaican accused of supplying cocaine near a children's centre was remanded in custody again when he appeared at Supreme Court yesterday.

Willston Davis, 42, of Somerset Road, Sandys, is accused of supplying cocaine in a restricted area, near Vernon Temple AME Child Care Centre in Southampton, on June 5 last year.

An application for bail from lawyer Victoria Pearman was turned down by Assistant Justice Archibald Warner and he was remanded in custody until next Tuesday.

X-Box, DVD's stolen

A thief stole DVD's, PlayStation 2 games and an X-Box game system from a Pembroke home on Thursday.

A Police spokesman said the thief gained entry to the Princess Street home sometime between 8.45 a.m. and 5.10 p.m.

Police probe crashes

There were nine traffic collisions resulting in injuries over the weekend, Police reported yesterday.

Six people were arrested for driving while impaired while there were also 16 damage-only road traffic collisions.

Arrest warrant issued

An arrest warrant was issued for Devonshire man Jermaine Jackson after he failed to appear at Supreme Court yesterday on wounding charges.

Jackson, 31, of Devonshire, is charged with wounding with intent to do grievous bodily harm to Edwin Wickham at the Henry VII bar on April 7 last year.
