Whitney honour all-rounder Smith
National cricket team skipper Clay Smith was enshrined in Whitney Institute?s Hall Of Fame yesterday.
The veteran footballer and cricketer, who underwent a third knee operation last week, became the first batsman ever to score three centuries in Cup Match last July and earlier this summer led Bermuda to a third-place finish in the Americas Regional Championship and qualification into next year?s International Cricket Council (ICC) World Cup Qualifying Tournament in Ireland, topping the team in the batting averages in the process.
The former St.George?s Cup match skipper also produced the most runs for Bermuda during this year?s ICC Inter-Continental Cup.
The gifted athlete has also enjoyed a successful football career, winning numerous championships at former Premier Division club Vasco da Gama and current club North Village.
Smith is the first Bermudian cricketer ever to score back-to-back centuries in a first class match and is a past Athlete of the Year and Local Cricketer of the Year Award recipient.
He shares Cup Match batting partnership records for the second wicket along with brother Wendell Smith (212, set in 1992) and fourth wicket (219, set in 2003) along with Charlie Marshall.
In the late 1990s Smith captained St.George?s to a clean sweep of domestic titles before coaching St.David?s to a sweep of championships in 2001.
The St.David?s player/coach and Whitney Institute teacher was honoured at a special ceremony at the Smith?s Parish school yesterday by colleagues, students and some of his former classmates at Whitney.
He is only the second former Whitney Institute student to be inducted into the school?s Hall Of Fame following Reading striker Shaun Goater?s induction in 2002.
?Words can?t even describe it,? said Smith following a brief ceremony.
?This took me totally by surprise. Everyone was shouting my name and I was like ?what do I do?? So I am very honoured.
?I am very grateful to Whitney for putting this on and it was a fabulous occasion. And I would like to thank Gareth Davies (deputy principal) and all of the teachers and students for making this a wonderful occasion.?
