Dominant Smith takes trophy in Great Sound

Promising sailor: Smith, second left

Benn Smith earned the distinction of having his name inscribed first on the Bermuda International Invitational Race Week trophy for the Youth Laser fleet at the weekend.

Smith dominated proceedings in the Great Sound, winning five of the eight races sailed to claim the title by a five-point margin after making one drop.

He finished no lower than second during the series, contested for in challenging conditions for the smaller dinghy classes on the Bravo course.

Thomas Penruddocke and George Buckley rounded off the podium finishers in the Youth Lasers that made its first appearance in Race Week this year.

Claiming Race Week bragging rights in the Comets was Rockal Evans and his girlfriend crew Christina Barnard.

The pair won the Spring Series Trophy in a series — which was reduced to three races because of strong winds yesterday morning — by a single point over Stevie Dickinson and Pat Young.

Evans was happy to win the title but admitted he would have liked to have seen more action on the water.

“I would have preferred to have sailed deeper into the series and get more racing in,” Evans said. “Sailing only three races took some of the sting out of it.

“Three races is not enough and if we would have sailed another day it would have been a whole mix up.”

Teenagers Ceci Wollmann and Peter Dill secured the final spot on the podium in the Comets.

Campbell Patton won the Bermuda Invitational Race Week Optimist Class regatta held in conjunction with the main event.

Meanwhile, provisional results showed Cam Pimental leading in the Laser after three races, John Hele leads the Etchells after seven races, while Peter Wickwire leads the International One Design A Series after three races.

Racing continues today for the Etchells, IODs and Lasers.
