Butcher's section has fresh deli fare
store on St. John's Road in Pembroke. Prior to renovations, T.A. Adderley & Sons Ltd. sold "a little bit of everything,'' according to owner, Mr. Gareath Adderley. And there was no butcher or deli available. Today, however, the store has progressed into a full service supermarket with the recent building of a new addition. The family-run grocery store now boasts some 2,500 square feet of selling space as well as extra storage capacity, all integrated into the existing structure. Butcher Mr. Charles Ricketts, who has been in the butcher business for 18 years, started working for T.A. Adderley in mid-November last year. He says the new deli equipment and freezers are all top of the line. And the fresh meats are of good quality. "The meats are comparable to most supermarkets on the Island,'' he notes. "Sanitary standards are one of my highest priorities,'' he adds, assuring customers of cleanliness in the butcher's area. Jerk chicken, barbecued chicken legs, pork chops, spare ribs, beef ribs, beef, chicken and fish pies and patties, Jamaican patties and vegetable patties are some of the specialties available in the store's new deli. "We offer customers something different in the deli every day,'' says Mr. Ricketts. "And on Saturdays, we cook roasts.'' A small variety of European cheeses including English cheddar and Portuguese cheese as well as pepperoni slices, smoked turkey, pastrami, corned beef and ham are also available. Fresh meats and cheeses are sliced to order, says Mr.
Ricketts. "And if you want a thicker or special cut, just ask,'' he says.
Cheese or cold-cut platters can also be arranged for special groups or parties. "Customers can phone or fax their order in and I'll have it ready for them,'' says Mr. Ricketts. There are also special weekly prices in the frozen meat section. Beef, for example, was on special during the Christmas season. Mr. Ricketts says it will take time to build a solid customer base in the store because it is new. And it is the first time T.A. Adderley has had fresh meats for sale. "But once we build a clientele, it will go over well,'' he says. "There will be no looking back. We're in an excellent location -- away from the hustle and bustle of town -- and hopefully we'll get some great business.''
