One of the incidents landed a 26-year-old Hamilton Parish man in King Edward VII Memorial Hospital early yesterday with a fractured jaw and facial injuries.

A fight was believed to have broken out between the injured man and another man at a Court Street bar following an argument.

In the other assault, a 32-year-old Pembroke man required stitches to his head after he was hit over the head with a bottle.

The man was attending a function at Horseshoe Bay during the early hours of Sunday morning when the "apparent unprovoked attack'' occurred, Police said.

CYCLE THEFT ARRESTS CRM Cycle theft arrests Police nabbed an 18-year-old cycle thief on the weekend.

The officers were patrolling the Spice Hill, Warwick area shortly after 5 a.m.

last Saturday when they saw the Southampton man riding the stolen cycle.

The man tried to escape from the officers, but they caught up with him at Camp Hill.

Police said the man was expected to appear in Magistrates' Court "in due course'' for the offence.

Two youths, aged 16 and 17, were also due to appear in court for riding a stolen auxiliary cycle.

The teenagers were arrested during the early hours of Sunday on South Shore Road, Warwick.

Police arrested a 15-year-old Paget male in the Salt Kettle Road area last Sunday evening on suspicion of stealing an auxiliary cycle.

Two other youths, who were also seen stealing cycles, managed to escape.

Police inquiries into the incidents were continuing.

TENDER OUT AGAIN FLY Tender out again The grounds maintenance contract for Bermuda International Airport is being retendered after the contractor who won the job found it was bigger than he expected.

Mr. Richard Savard, project manager for Serco Aviation Services Inc., said Jo-Car Ltd. of Bermuda "was unable to comply with the provisions of the contract''.

The Airport site has now been divided into six areas, and contractors may bid on them individually, or in combination.

Mr. Derek Exell, managing director of Jo-Car, said the work involved in the contract was "a lot more than anticipated''. After a meeting, Serco and Jo-Car mutually agreed to re-tender the job in smaller packages, he said.

Jo-Car still hoped to win a share of the maintenance work, which is to begin on August 1, he said.

The US Naval Air Station at St. David's, which closes on September 1, is being turned over to Government from the Navy in stages.

BUILDING APPROVED PLN Building approved Plans have been approved to convert a former Hamilton store into a four-storey office block and a penthouse.

The proposal by Exchange Ltd., backed by Management Resources Ltd., to convert the Lines Brothers building on Reid Street has been approved in principle by the Development Applications Board.

Architect Mr. Stanley Kennedy said the proposed offices would be rented out and used by Exchange Ltd. It is understood, the penthouse would be available to tenants as well.

Each of the four floors for the offices extended to 2,800 square feet, Mr.

Kennedy added.

Mr. Kennedy imagined the conversion, reported to cost about $2 million, would start in September, and take about six or seven months to complete.

In its ruling, the DAB stated final approval would be required for the design and external appearance of the building.

ROAD STILL CLOSED TFC Road still closed Cemetery Road will remain closed until September 1st unless the Bermuda Electric Light Company manages to complete the work it is doing there before then.

Belco spokesman Ms Linda Smith, said the road was originally closed until July 1 but Belco asked for an extension from the Ministry of Works and Engineering when work took longer than expected.

She added Belco had advertised the road closure and ensured there was access to businesses on the road.
