Man pleads guilty to possessing heroin

A Smith’s man caught with heroin and more than $5,000 in cash pleaded guilty to possessing the controlled drug.Jahmiko Hayward, 28, also pleaded guilty to having drug equipment, and previously admitted possessing cannabis on the same occasion.Magistrates’ Court heard that Hayward was arrested near his home on December 23, 2011, and during a search officers discovered 0.27g of cannabis and 0.27g of heroin. They also found a total of $5,050 in cash in his pockets.A subsequent search of his home revealed a scale and several sandwich bags with the ends removed.He initially pleaded guilty to possessing the cannabis, but denied a charge of possessing heroin with intent to supply and drug equipment. During an appearance in court, prosecutors amended the information, reducing the charge of possessing heroin with intent to supply to simple possession of heroin. Hayward then pleaded guilty to the remaining offences.Lawyer Eugene Johnson, representing Hayward, told the court the defendant was a hard working father of four, and that the drugs were for his personal use. He also explained that Hayward had the cash on him because he was supposed to purchase Christmas presents.Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner ordered a social inquiry report and drug assessment on Hayward, releasing him on $10,000 bail with a like surety.
