Gallant Frost falls short at US open

as Bermuda placed 50th at the US Open Team Table Tennis Championships in Detroit, Michigan, yesterday.

Bermuda qualified in group D and after posting a 6-1 record in their division the team of Frost, Dexter Smith and coach George Cooper reached the final against Canadian female team called More Canadian Women.

With Bermuda trailing 4-3, Smith defeated Petra Cada 21-16, 22-20, which left the Frost match-up against Michele Cada as the decider.

Cada took the first game at 21-16 but Frost, with little energy left after a hectic weekend schedule, battled back and took the second at 21-17 and then forged into a 9-3 lead in the rubber game.

It was then that Cada could not miss as she reeled off 15 straight points with an accurate backhand flick.

Frost gave it his all as he scored four straight points after trailing 20-13, but Cada settled it with a forehand smash, the Bermuda player return going inches long.

Bermuda, with the 5-4 loss, finished with an 8-4 record in the 182-team field.

Cooper, who spent the past month coaching in Bermuda with his son Anthony, struggled early in the tournament, which started on Friday, but rebounded to post the best record of 22-9. Smith, who missed last year's tournament and saw his rating dropped from 1958 to 1875, finished at 15-12 while Frost was 11-12 and Robin Swan 0-1. Swan played the second match on Friday in place of Frost.

Bermuda II placed 152nd after finishing eighth in group J. The second team, captained by tour manager Roland Lines were originally seeded to be in group I but were upset in the preliminaries by Rotten Apples 5-4 and had to make the drop.

Overall, the team had five wins and seven losses. Cal Butterfield was their top player with 14 wins and seven losses. Kacy King was 10-8, Roland Lines 3-13 and Llewellyn Smith 2-13.

Dave Mahabir, who coached and played for Bermuda the past two seasons, was at the tournament and finished in group C for a top 48 spot. He was ironically beaten in one match by Anthony Cooper, who played for Augusta College's second team.

Former Bermuda television personality Dave Burchell continued his improvement while living in Cincinnati and his side finished in group E for a top 64 spot.

The overall competition was won by China by 3-1 score over Potomac I.
