Addict fined for handbag snatch

A Pembroke man admitted stealing a woman's handbag while she was at a café socialising with friends.

Richard Marshall, 27, of St. John's Road, pleaded guilty to theft when he appeared at Magistrates' Court.

The court heard from Crown counsel Nicole Smith that Marshall targeted victim Cindy Redford on Saturday after she left the bag containing $700 and other valuables unattended.

According to Ms Smith, Marshall snatched Ms Redford's handbag and ran off into Par-la-Ville Park. The victim called the Police who were patrolling the area and officers later found Marshall in the park going through the bag's contents.

Marshall told the court: "I took it cause I needed money." He also apologised for the offence. The defendant told the court that he works at J&G Construction and is a user of heroin and crack cocaine.

He said he was under the influence at the time of the robbery but has since started going to Turning Point Substance Abuse Programme for treatment.

Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner remanded Marshall into custody until December 10 despite hearing his vow not to re-offend and plea: "What about my wife and daughter?"

The Magistrate told the defendant: "You are of no help to them right now."

He ordered pre-sentencing reports.

It will take place at 7 p.m. on Thursday at the Ebenezer Methodist Church on York Street in St George's and will feature a session from funeral director Doreen Williams-James, who is experienced in counselling bereaved families.
