A football coach, a lawyer, and the man who wants to establish Bermuda's first airline are among the final election candidates rolled out by the ruling Progressive Labour Party's (PLP) yesterday at its Alaska Hall headquarters.

"We've come a long way from land based votes and plus votes, from a voting age of 25 and then 21 to now 18 and a voting system of continuous registrations under an independent parliamentary registrar," the Premier said. "We can now say that this is indeed a new Bermuda, a new democracy."

Veteran party member Aurelia Burch, was named as the candidate was district 12, or Devonshire South Central.

"While we have some support within that constituency, it is not a constituency that is winnable at this time," said Ms Smith of Devonshire South Central, explaining that the district was carved out of the old Paget East.

Ms Burch has run as the PLP's candidate for Paget East several times.

"It is because you are my friends that I can still find myself available whenever the party needs me," Ms Burch said.

As expected Stanley Lowe was named to Southampton East, or constituency 29, while entrepreneur Raymond Tannock will run as the candidate for the neighbouring district 30 (Southampton East Central). Mr. Lowe said he was "delighted" to be running again and was "looking forward to a momentous and exciting election under the new single seat constituencies." Honorary Consul of Austria to Bermuda, Leopold Kuchler, has been chosen as the candidate for district 23, or Paget West, and the former Captain of the St. George's Cricket Team Neville Thomas Darrell was named as the candidate for district 20, or Pembroke South West. Mr. Kuchler has been involved in the hospitality industry for 30 years and is the owner manager of the Vienna Guest House in Warwick.

He is also the president and chairman of airline Bermuda Star which wants to fly direct to Cologne, Germany, Manchester, England, Newark, New Jersey, Orlando, Florida, and Chicago. Neville Tyrell has stepped down as party chairman to run in district 11, or Devonshire East and Scott Simmons, a former narcotics officer has been selected to run in district nine, or Smiths West.

Roderick Burchall, will act as party chairman, it was announced.

Lawyer Elizabeth Christopher is the candidate for the neighbouring district eight, or Smiths South, and Danvers Seymour will be running as the PLP's candidate for the district known as St. Davids (number three).

Yesterday's announcement means that both of the main political parties have now named a candidate for each of the new electoral districts.

In all 38 candidates, including independent Stuart Hayward and the National Liberal Party's (NLP) have so far been announced so far.
