Work will begin on revamping the former Lantana resort into a world-class wellness centre later this summer after the sale was finally confirmed, it was announced yesterday.

Developer Don Burkett is hoping to open the property in Sandys for the 2006 season after completing the sale from owner John Young.

Phase one will see the spa built, along with 14 spa suites, six private residences, four beachfront villas, and four yacht club villas, and is scheduled to be ready by October next year.

The second and third phases are scheduled to begin early next year.

Eventually, the resort will have 40 hotel suites, six private villas, 17 beachfront villas, four corporate suites, a 25,000 square foot spa and conference centre, a 25 slip marina, gourmet restaurants, a tennis and croquet club, and a yacht club.

The American developer told The Royal Gazette recently the resort will provide ultra-luxury services such as arranging private jets for clients, personal butlers and in-room massages.

Tourism Minister Renee Webb said yesterday: “This is very exciting news for Bermuda.

“The Lantana experience will integrate the natural beauty and authenticity of Lantana with the ‘lifestyle' experience of world-class waterfront resorts.

“In terms of hotel developments, there has been nothing of its kind on such a grand scale before in Bermuda's tourism history and we are truly looking forward to the finished product.

“The spa industry is growing rapidly as people seek personal care and fulfilment to help balance their frantic lifestyles. The Lantana Group has a very succinct and well-balanced project development in mind for the former Lantana property.

“It is this Government's belief that the Lantana development will be a key ingredient to ensuring Bermuda is positioned as one of the most exclusive spa resorts in the international tourism industry.”

The development will be similar to the Lantana Group's other wellness resort in Mendocino, California.

A spokesman for the developers said yesterday: “We are so excited to announce the completion of our acquisition of the Lantana property. We look forward to working closely with the Department of Tourism to transform Lantana into the ultimate destination in Bermuda.

“We also believe that when the local and international hospitality industry understand our development vision, Lantana will be a catalyst to the overall elevation of the tourism industry in Bermuda for many years to come.
