Nineteen graduate from tech school
Nineteen Bermudian students graduated from the New England Institute of Technology (NEIT).
The move has allowed Bermuda to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the school solidifying their relationship. The students had been part of the National Training Board's (NTB) further education programme. Yesterday Minister of Labour, Home Affairs and Housing David Burch said: "I am very pleased that the Ministry was able to aid in this type of academic accomplishment.
"This achievement is proof positive that we do have young people who are involved in positive activities and we salute their success."
He added: "Essentially, the MOU formally reaffirms Government's and the NEIT's commitment to our students. The general intent of the parties is to cooperate in education and training initiatives to further develop the skilled labour force of Bermuda through developing and accessing educational programmes."
Permanent Secretary Dr. Derrick Binns signed the MOU on behalf of Government. "Nineteen of our own received associates' and bachelor's degrees and we couldn't be prouder," he stated.
"For our part the Government will continue to nurture and foster this growing relationship with NEIT and seek to ensure that our Bermudian students are exposed to the best possible further education opportunities."
As of September 2008, a total of 218 Bermuda students had enrolled at NEIT. Since 2001, Bermuda students have been awarded 119 associate degrees and 35 bachelor degrees in a variety of programmes including information technology, electrical technology, marine technology and business management technology.
