Fetishes can be more than toes, feathers, whips and chains, which is why they are the subject of a new art show opening tonight in Hamilton.The artists’ collective Bermudian Artists Rise Up (BARU) is to explore the unique and sometimes weird world of fetishes in ‘Fetish’.The art exhibit opens tonight at Terceira Quarterly Associates Architects and Interior Design in Hamilton’s Walker Arcade.“Members of the group felt that the word fetish evoked all sorts of connotations that would inspire artists to create images that transcended your typical conservative Bermuda art show,” said BARU member Ami Zanders. “The word has many different meanings that go beyond sexual kink, leather and feet. Artists will explore topics such as idol worship, shrunk heads, and the worship of body parts, for example, using various mediums.”Fetish will feature work by a number of artists including Keitha Bassett, Dany Pen, Summer Wood, Calix Smith, Alexandra Mosher, Chris Mahoney, Davika Hill, Manuel Palacio, Ms Zanders, Milton Hill, Tricia Abbott Walters, Lisa Woodley, Vanessa Richmond and Mark Henderson.BARU got its start from a Facebook page created by artist Calix Smith. The page was designed as a forum for progressive local visual and performing artists to share ideas as well as to promote their projects.Since its inception a year ago the group has grown to 172 members and has put on the art exhibits such as Not Your Nana’s Art Show, and the MAD show. Fetish will be their final show for the year.Tonight’s opening is from 6pm to 8pm. The show can also be seen Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm through December 18.
