Dickinson sounds confident

Stevie Dickinson and female crew Ty Trott will place their West End Sailboat Club Regatta crown on the line when comet sailing resumes tomorrow in the Great Sound.

Tomorrow will mark the first time the East End Mini Yacht Club sailors have competed together since last April's International Race Week.

In recent years, the dynamic duo have proven to be a formidable combination, obliterating the fleet last year en route to seizing multiple championships before Trott embarked on a self-imposed exile earlier this campaign.

Still, in spite of Trott's absence, Dickinson has managed to extend his dominance over the fleet, though he relinquished his Long Distance crown to arch-rival Rudy Bailey earlier this month.

“I love sailing in Somerset and I am up for the challenge,” Dickinson declared. “I am going back to the old Stevie; very aggressive and sailing consistently. So my intentions are to sail consistently, sail to win and Ty (Trott) is always ready to go. Although I haven't sailed since the Long Distance Race, hopefully everything is in gear and we can make a good showing.”

Four races are slated for tomorrow's regatta with skippers allotted one drop.

In addition to Dickinson, rival skippers Gladwin Lambert, Colin Clarke, James Perry, Howard Lee, Howard Simmons, Scott Fox, Jamie Harvey and the sizzling-hot Rudy Bailey are also anticipated to be among the hunt for line honours.

Bailey, this year's Long Distance and Mid Winters champion, captured the North American Comet Championships in Annapolis, Maryland last weekend and could pose as a major threat to Dickinson's plans of defending his crown.

East End Mini Yacht Club skippers Heath Foggo and Romano Ramirez, meanwhile, remain doubtful, the latter through a broken mast sustained during The Long Distance trek west.

Tomorrow will see skippers from the West End Sailboat Club, Mid Atlantic Sailboat Club and East End Mini Yacht Club all competing for bragging rights.

Racing begins at noon.
