Man jailed six months for crime spree
on a spree or just had a rash of bad luck after committing several crimes last summer.
She jailed him for a total of six months.
Darrell, of Channel View Road Hamilton Parish, yesterday admitted stealing from the Footlocker store, attempting to steal from the Modern Mart, entering a house without permission, and damaging a Hamilton cell window.
He also pleaded guilty to riding a motor bike which was unlicensed and was uninsured.
Police prosecutor Insp. Peter Duffy told the Court that on May 19 last year Darrell stole a pair of running shoes worth $104.95 from the Footlocker.
Insp. Duffy also said that on May 4 Darrell was seen, on a surveillance camera, taking a bottle of Bacardi Rum and a bottle of whisky valued at $51.60 from the Modern Mart in Paget.
Police were called and Darrell was taken into custody.
On September 19 at 12 p.m. Darrell walked into the Hamilton parish home of a 79-year-old woman through an open front door.
The woman saw Darrell, and he ran out.
"He was arrested on October 13 and admitted entering the house without permission but he told Police that he only wanted to borrow a lawn mower and he had no intentions of stealing anything,'' Insp. Duffy said.
And on October 14 while in a cell at the St. George's Police station, Darrell was banging on the cell door and when officers went to see him they noticed that he had damaged a window and a screen. He said he did it out of frustration.
Insp. Duffy also told the court that Darrell had a criminal record for stealing, theft, forgery and other offences which began with his first conviction at the age of 17.
Defence lawyer Mr. Larry Scott said someone Darrell was with had snuck the shoes into his client's bag, and that he often visited the son of the 79-year-old woman.
Mr. Scott also said that Darrell was trying to straighten his life out.
Mrs. Mapp said: "Either you had some sort of spree going on last summer or just a rash of bad luck or maybe it's just a continuation of your bad behaviour.'' Mrs. Mapp sentenced Darrell to six months in prison for stealing from Footlocker, six months in prison for stealing from the Modern Mart, six months in prison for entering a home, and three months for unlawful entry. The sentences are to run concurrently.
She also fined him $200 for having no third party insurance and $100 for riding without a licence.
