Rupee rocks Clearwater

Chip, chip, chip: Alison Hinds took the audience on a march during her spectacular performance at the SocaRama concert on Saturday night.

Put your hands in a de air ? move to the left ? move to the right ? and get ready to wine were only a few of the commands that came from the King and Queen of Soca to the rag throwing and winding crowd.

The Soca Royalty stole the show during Saturday night's SocaRama Concert at Gombeys, at Clearwater Beach.

Rupee bounced onto the stage in dynamic form, while Alison Hinds wowed the crowds with the strength of her voice and her hips.

Rupee's music pulled on the strings of Rock, Reggae and Soca. He opened with Tempted to Touch and he and his music director/guitarist Show Stopper bounced across the floor in unison.

Chip, Chip, Chip was another song that took the audience from just bouncing to swirling rags.

Thanks for the Carnival rang out across the crowd and people went wild for him.

Rupee later sang a song dedicated to his mother who died of AIDS ? he told the crowds that she was infected by his dad who also abused his mother. The song expressed the wish for men to respect women.

"Everyday it is a constant reminder that the men of this earth aren't taking care of the women the way they are supposed to," he said.

"And we need to do something about it ? for real. So, I want to dedicate this song to everyone here who has lost someone they love."

He started off playing the guitar, but then just sang and encouraged the crowds to put their hands in the sky for mothers.

During Blame it on the Music the rags took over and it looked like a fleet of hundreds of helicopters swirling through the air.

Crowds screaming for an encore, he came back with What Happens in de Party Stays in the Party. Rupee left the crowds wanting and begging for more.

Members of the Dot.com Band also played for Alison Hinds when she came onto the stage and although the sound system messed up a little during Ms Hind's performance she said she did not plan to stop.

She continued singing and the sound engineers got it sorted. She soon had the crowds travelling from left to right ? back to front ? swinging their arms up in the air and waving their rags.

Later on she invited a few young men who thought they could wind to come up on the stage with her. But the one that the audience chose would sound so bad that they both ended up on the floor.

She sang her new hit Roll It after explaining to the audience that it was an empowerment song for women.

Ms Hinds' songs like Ragamuffin, Iron Bazodee, DJ Ride, In De Meantime and Faluma and others left you wanting more.

However, the Mighty Sparrow was not a hit with the younger crowd and some of the older people in the audience did not think that he was quite up to par on this occasion.

But, the MC pointed out that the Mighty Sparrow had over several decades of experience ? five in fact ? and should be respected for that.

He said: "That is a veteran right there. I know the old folks are loving that."

On the whole the concert was a success and although it rained across the Island there were only a few sprinkles down in the East End.
