yesterday to two escapes in three days from Hamilton Police Station.

Assisted by two Police officers into and out of the courtroom Hypolite was presented before Magistrate Archibald Warner -- the man who jailed him for non payment of $1,050 in fines on Monday.

Hypolite, 28, of Loyal Hill, Devonshire, was charged on two separate incidents of escaping Police custody, as well as destruction of a window.

Although Police claim he broke his ankle, Hypolite was not wearing a cast on either ankle.

But he had great difficulty when walking and was doubled over in pain with each step.

When Mr. Warner asked why he went on the run, Hypolite said he wanted to get money to pay his fines. But for the second escape, he said: "I was under the influence of drugs. That was my motive.'' Duty counsel Peter Farge told Mr. Warner Hypolite's brother had read about him being taken into custody for unpaid fines, as well as his subsequent escape, and had offered to pay his fines.

Mr. Warner said he was unconcerned who paid the fines, as long as they were going to be paid.

Prosecutor Cindy Clark told the court Hypolite was allowed to use the phone in order to contact relatives for help in paying his fines. But he walked out of the Police station past a female officer processing other prisoners.

He was caught on Tuesday, and held pending an investigation into his escape.

The following day Hypolite was taken from his holding cell to the CID department on the fourth floor where he was interviewed for several minutes, and then left alone by investigators.

Ms Clark said Police heard a noise coming from the interview room just five minutes later, and returned to find Hypolite gone.

He had dislodged security bars from the interview room window, and jumped onto a nearby roof.

After an appeal to the public, he was caught just over an hour later near the Paget Ice Queen after a tip. In addition to Hypolite's outstanding fines, totalling $1050, Mr. Warner fined him $500 for his escape on Monday and $800 for Tuesday's escape.

For breaking the window at the station, he must pay $300 for damage to Government property.

If the fines were not paid by yesterday, Hypolite must serve a 60 day sentence for non-payment.

Hypolite was then assisted again by two Policemen from the Court room.
